The term war
Why AEO Is Too Narrow
AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, names the direct answer. The direct answer matters, but it is one output among several, and not the most consequential one. AI does not only answer. It recommends. AIO is the whole, and the answer is one part of it.
AIO / AI Optimization / noun
AI Optimization is the practice of making a brand, business, person, product, organization, or idea understandable, trustworthy, discoverable, and recommendable across AI-powered systems.
What AEO gets right
AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is a thoughtful term. It recognizes that AI systems increasingly hand the user a single answer instead of a page of options, and that earning a place in that answer is a real skill. The people who use AEO are pointing at something true: the answer is a high-stakes surface, and it deserves attention.
The trouble is not that AEO is false. The trouble is that the answer is only one of the things AI does, and naming the whole discipline after it leaves most of the discipline unnamed.
The answer is one output. Recommendation is the bigger one.
Think about what people actually ask AI. Some questions want a fact: a date, a definition, a figure. For those, an answer is the right output, and AEO describes the work well. But many questions want a judgment. Who should I hire. What should I buy. Which option is best for my situation. For those, AI does not answer so much as recommend, and recommendation is a different act with different stakes.
Recommendation is arguably the most valuable thing AI does for a brand, because a recommendation is a referral. Being the answer to "what year was this founded" is useful. Being the recommendation to "who is the best firm for this near me" is the entire game. AEO, by naming the answer, quietly omits the recommendation. AIO names both.
Being the answer is useful. Being the recommendation is the entire game. AEO names the first. AIO names both.
And there is more than answers and recommendations
Below the visible answer, AI is doing work that AEO does not reach:
- Retrieval: pulling facts about a brand from sources it trusts, whether or not an answer is ever shown.
- Entity understanding: deciding what a brand is, what category it belongs to, and how confident it is.
- Recommendation: ranking options when the user wants a judgment, not a fact.
- Generation: composing original summaries that may mention a brand in passing.
Each of these shapes whether a brand is seen, trusted, and suggested. None of them is an "answer" in the narrow sense AEO uses. A term for the whole discipline has to cover all of them. AEO covers one.
Why AIO is the right level
AIO sits above the individual outputs. It names the optimization of a brand's relationship with AI in every mode: the answer, the recommendation, the retrieval, the understanding. Answer Engine Optimization is the right term for the answer specifically. It is the wrong term for the discipline, because the discipline is larger than its most visible surface.
AEO names the most visible surface. AIO names the whole.
This is the same shape of argument that applies to GEO and to LLMO: a true term about a part being asked to do the work of a term about the whole. Read the full case in Why AIO Wins, or get the neutral comparison on AIO Facts.
Questions
Common questions about AEO
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It refers to optimizing so that AI systems and answer engines surface your information as a direct answer to a question.
Is AEO too narrow?
AEO is too narrow to name the whole discipline. It covers direct answers, which are one valuable output of AI, but it leaves out recommendation, retrieval, and entity understanding. AIO covers all of these, with answers as one part.
Why is AIO better than AEO?
Answering is one output of AI among several. The highest-value output is often recommendation, deciding who to suggest, which AEO does not name. AIO covers answers and recommendation together, so it describes the whole discipline rather than one slice.
The whole, not a slice
Answers are a part. AIO is the whole.
The discipline is larger than its most visible surface. Read the case for the umbrella term.
