What makes a claim verifiable

The difference between a statement a system can check and one it can only record, and why the second kind quietly weakens everything around it.

Two kinds of statement

A business page is full of assertions. Some can be checked against something outside the business; most cannot. AI optimization treats these very differently, because a system does too.

Checkable: a licence number that resolves against a register, a membership that appears in the body list, an address that matches a public record, a named client who confirms it elsewhere, a figure with a cited source.

Recordable only: that you are the leading provider, that you care about quality, that your service is unmatched. These are not lies. They are unfalsifiable, which means they carry no information.

Why unverifiable claims cost something

The intuition is that they are neutral: they might not help, but they cannot hurt. In practice a page composed mostly of unfalsifiable superlatives resembles every low-quality page in the same category, because that is exactly what those pages are made of.

Similarity to a known pattern is itself a signal. So the cost is not that the claims are ignored, it is that they make the page look like something.

The substitution that works: replace one superlative with one checkable fact. "Trusted by leading firms" becomes a named client with a link. The second is shorter, less flattering, and worth more.

The four properties of a verifiable claim

Specific. A number, a name, a date, a place. Vagueness is what makes a claim uncheckable in the first place.

Attributed. Where the fact comes from, stated on the page rather than assumed.

Dated. Facts expire. An undated figure is a claim about an unspecified moment, and it silently becomes wrong.

Independently confirmable. The strongest property. Something a reader could check without asking you.

What to do when the evidence does not exist

Write the true, smaller thing. A business with two named client results and no more should publish two, not imply twenty. The instinct to inflate is understandable and it converts a modest verifiable position into an unverifiable one, which is a downgrade rather than an improvement.

Why this is the load-bearing part of AI optimization

Retrieval and comprehension get a business read and understood. Verifiability is what makes what was understood worth acting on. It is also the only part of the work that cannot be done by making the page more impressive, which is why it is usually the part that gets skipped.
