Consistency across sources, and why it does not average
Three descriptions that disagree do not produce a middle answer. They produce low confidence in all three, and low confidence is why a business gets skipped.
The assumption that breaks
Businesses reasonably assume that more mentions in more places is better, and that any one of them being slightly off does not matter much. Neither holds.
A system assembling an understanding of a business from several sources is not averaging them. It is looking for agreement, and disagreement is a signal about reliability rather than a rounding problem.
What disagreement does
When the site says one category, a business profile says another, and a directory says a third, the result is not a blend. It is reduced confidence in the whole entity, and a system with low confidence in a business is a system that names a clearer competitor instead.
This is the mechanism that makes consistency work worth more than it looks. Fixing a contradiction does not add a signal. It stops an existing signal from being discounted.
The counterintuitive consequence: removing an inaccurate listing can improve AI optimization more than adding an accurate one. Subtraction is a legitimate and under-used move here.
The five things worth checking
Name. Exact legal and trading forms, including whether a suffix appears. Small variations propagate and multiply.
Address and service area. The most common source of contradiction, usually because an old location was never retired anywhere.
Category. The single most consequential field, and the one most often chosen by whoever set up a listing years ago.
What the business does. Descriptions written independently at different times drift, and each was accurate when written.
Ownership and relationships. Parent companies, brands, and sub-brands. Unstated relationships get inferred, and inference goes wrong.
Where contradictions come from
Almost never carelessness. A listing created for a launch and never revisited. A directory that scraped an old page. A rebrand applied to the site and not to sixty other places. A franchise or location listing maintained by someone with different information. Every one of these was correct at the moment it was created.
Why this is unglamorous and disproportionately effective
It produces no new content, photographs nothing, and cannot be shown in a portfolio. It is also frequently the largest single improvement available to a business that has been trading for a decade, because a decade generates a great many stale records. AI optimization work that starts with a consistency audit tends to move the number faster than work that starts with publishing.
